Abdominoplasty

What is abdominoplasty?

Abdominoplasty, also called a tummy tuck, is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat and skin from your abdomen to create a slimmer, trimmer abdominal profile. This procedure can also repair stretched or torn abdominal muscles.

A tummy tuck is often the central component in a Mommy Makeover, a combination of plastic surgery procedures to help mothers return to their pre-pregnancy physique. It’s also a great way to address loose or sagging skin after significant weight loss. Many older men and women pursue abdominoplasty to address changes in the shape and firmness of their abdomen over time.

What happens during a tummy tuck?

You’ll receive general anesthesia to ensure you rest comfortably throughout the procedure. Dr. Cabrera begins by making an incision that runs across your lower abdomen from one hip to the other.

He then removes any excess skin and fat from your abdomen. He can also repair any damaged muscle tissue at this point in the procedure, stitching the muscles back into proper positioning. The next step is to reposition your belly button as needed, which leaves no additional scarring as the incision lines are hidden inside your navel.

Once he’s pleased with the shape and firmness of your abdomen, Dr. Cabrera pulls your skin taut, trims away any excess, and closes the incision carefully before dressing the area with sterile bandaging.

What is the recovery process like after abdominoplasty?

Abdominoplasty alters multiple tissue types, and your body needs a period of time to heal and adjust to those changes. While a tummy tuck can be done as an outpatient procedure, you also have the option of staying overnight in a state-of-the-art recovery suite, where your condition is monitored around the clock by skilled recovery nurses. You can also arrange for a recovery nurse to accompany you home for the first night.

You can expect to relax and recover at home for around 10 days before you begin increasing your physical activities. Dr. Cabrera prescribes medication to control discomfort as this process moves forward.

It may take several more weeks for the postsurgical swelling to fully subside, at which point you’ll be able to see the results of your procedure.
