The Facts About Fat Grafting

So much of life is about resource allocation. You spend less on dinners out leading up to a vacation so you can splurge while you travel. You log more hours at work so you can cover a purchase you’ve been wanting to make. You don’t finish that dinner so you have leftovers for lunch tomorrow.

You can apply a similar mentality to your overall shape. With fat grafting, you move fat from areas where you have it in excess to areas where you could use a boost. By managing your body’s own resources in this way, you have a natural way to move toward your cosmetic goals.

Rafael C. Cabrera, MD, FACS, offers fat grafting at Plastic Surgery Specialists of Boca Raton. To help you determine if this option could be a good solution for changing your shape, we cover some facts about fat grafting here.

How you can use fat grafting

Fat grafting, also called fat transfer, is by no means new. In fact, medical experts have been using it since the late 1800s. Over the years, the process has become increasingly refined.

Talk with Dr. Cabrera about your specific goals, and he tailors a plan for you. That starts with identifying the area from which you want to take the fat. That could be anywhere you feel you have it in excess, such as your abdomen, hips, upper thighs, or buttocks.

Dr. Cabrera can move the fat to anywhere you want more volume. That includes larger body areas like your:

Alternatively, he can apply the fat in a finessed way to improve contour or add volume in smaller areas, including the:

There’s no shortage of ways Dr. Cabrera can use this transformative treatment.

The fat grafting process

Dr. Cabrera starts the process by using liposuction to remove fat from the area you’ve identified. He thoroughly numbs the area and uses sophisticated technology to gently suction away fat cells.

Once those cells are cleaned and readied for transfer, we put them into syringes so Dr. Cabrera can apply it precisely where you want the extra fat. Dr. Cabrera numbs the area where he’ll apply the fat grafting. He applies as many syringes as needed to provide your desired level of volume.

Outlook after fat transfer

You may have some mild soreness after treatment. You can return home the same day or opt to spend the night following the procedure in one of our recovery suites. Most people get back to their usual activities within a couple of weeks.

It usually takes at least a few months for the fat cells to develop their own blood supply. At that point, you’ll be able to see your final results.

You should know that not every fat cell Dr. Cabrera applies will survive the transfer. That said, he can apply platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to provide resources to help more of those cells establish themselves in their new home.
