Brighten Your Eyes for the New Year: What to Expect from Eyelid Surgery
With 2026 underway, a lot of people turn their attention to making improvements in their life. Whether you set New Year’s resolutions or see January as a fresh start, you might be looking for ways to improve your appearance, as the years have been taking a toll on your face.
If you’re bothered by the area around your eyes in particular, we have a suggestion. With eyelid surgery, you can brighten your eyes, get rid of undereye bags, and lift sagging eyelids. This procedure can transform your appearance, helping you look younger and more refreshed.
Rafael C. Cabrera, MD, FACS, has extensive experience performing eyelid surgery. At Plastic Surgery Specialists of Boca Raton, well known for expertise in facial plastic surgery, Dr. Cabrera can help you decide if this procedure is right for you.
What eyelid surgery can do
Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, gives you a way to address baggy, sagging skin around your eyes. While it’s called eyelid surgery, its effects extend beyond just the lids themselves. Dr. Cabrera uses this procedure to address excess skin around the entire eye area, including under your eyes.
If you’re bothered by drooping eyelids, undereye bags, or both, blepharoplasty can address these issues beautifully. If your upper eyelids have sagged far enough that they impair your vision, you’re a particularly good candidate for this surgery.

Deciding if eyelid surgery is right for you
Eyelid surgery could be right for you if you’re over 35, in good health without any eye conditions (such as glaucoma or dry eye), and you have realistic expectations.
Blepharoplasty addresses excess skin around your eyes. It won’t necessarily get rid of crow’s feet or dark circles, though. Talk with Dr. Cabrera about all of your cosmetic goals, and he and the aesthetics team at Plastic Surgery Specialists of Boca Raton can work with you to make a plan to address them.
What you should know about the procedure
As you decide if you want eyelid surgery, it also helps to know what eyelid surgery entails.
The procedure itself usually takes 1-3 hours, depending on how much correction Dr. Cabrera performs around your eyes. It’s an outpatient surgery, which means you can go home the same day. You can also stay in our overnight recovery suite if you prefer.
Your eyes might be puffy, watery, or sensitive after the surgery. Blurred vision is also normal. We give you specific aftercare instructions to help you navigate your recovery. That usually means applying eye drops or ointment, using ice packs to manage any discomfort, and protecting your eyes — don’t rub them as they heal.
Most people get back to their normal activities within 10 days. Dr. Cabrera and our team work with you as you recover to clear you for different activities, like returning to work and exercising.
If you’re looking to make a change in the new year and you’re curious to explore eyelid surgery in more detail, schedule a consultation with Dr. Cabrera. Call our team in Boca Raton, Florida, today.
