Why Breast Lifts Now Outpace Breast Implants

The number of breast lifts performed every year has been on an increasing trend, and for a good reason: A breast lift can fix nearly every issue you might have with the appearance of your breasts, except one: A lift won’t enlarge your breasts with implants. However, a lift can make your breasts look larger, as your droopy breasts are reshaped and restored to their proper position on your chest.

We spend a lot of time talking with our patients at Plastic Surgery Specialists of Boca Raton in Boca Raton, Florida. We learn what they don’t like about their breasts and why they want surgery to change their appearance. We’ve put that info together in this blog about why breast lifts may outpace breast implants.

Breast lift procedures follow a rising trend

When you get breast implants to enlarge the size of your breasts, the surgical procedure is called breast augmentation. Augmentation has been the most popular cosmetic procedure for years, with nearly three times more augmentation surgeries performed every year than breast lifts.

But we’re taking more notice of breast lifts now because they’re on a dramatic upward trend, according to nearly two decades of statistics tracked by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

The 2018 report from the ASPS shows that the number of breast lift surgeries increased an amazing 108% from 2000 to 2018. Even though augmentation maintains a solid lead, augmentation surgeries only rose by 48% during the same period.

While no one has officially studied why breast lifts are on the rise, these are three of the top reasons why our patients prefer a lift over an implant.

Enhance your natural beauty

A breast lift enhances your natural beauty. When your surgery is over, you’re simply a better, more confident version of the woman you’ve always been. Many women aren’t interested in bigger breasts. They simply want to correct problems that develop over the years that make their natural breasts less attractive.

Eliminate sagging breasts

When women are thinking about a breast lift, one of their biggest complaints is sagging breasts, a common problem that develops due to changes in their skin.

Pregnancy and weight changes are two of the top causes of sagging breasts because they create excess skin. In both cases, your breasts get larger, which stretches the skin. Then when you finish breastfeeding or you drop those extra pounds, your skin doesn’t spring back to its normal shape.

Additionally, the ligaments supporting your breasts are stretched. As a result, you’re left with not only excess skin, but no support, which allows your breasts to succumb to gravity.

Aging also has a big impact on your breasts, especially after menopause. When estrogen levels drop, your skin produces less collagen. Without collagen, your skin becomes thin, weak, and less resilient, contributing to the general sagging issue.

During a breast lift, we can easily fix this problem. We remove excess skin, tighten the underlying tissues, and eliminate sagging.

Restore lost volume

Lost volume goes hand in hand with many of the changes that cause excess skin and sagging. Declining hormones, weight loss, and normal changes that occur in your skin as you get older lead to lost breast volume.

When you stop producing estrogen, your mammary glands shrink, further reducing breast volume. And, of course, lost volume only makes it easier for breasts to sag.

When we perform a breast lift, we reshape your natural breast tissue. As we restore the shape of your breasts and lift and tighten the skin, your breasts regain fullness, especially at the top.

Regain a more youthful appearance

Restoring a more youthful appearance may include enlarging your breast size with an implant. But size isn’t what makes breasts look youthful. Whether they’re large or small, youthful-looking breasts are firm and up on your chest, not hanging down toward your elbows.
